Thread regarding T-Mobile layoffs

Sinking ship?

Cost of HSI is more than the revenue it generates. 3% HSI customers occupies more than 50% of network capacity.
Hence more layoffs to reduce overall costs.
Stock price stays high bcoz the volume is low average daily is less than 1/10th volume of Verizon or AT&T.
Markets are getting tricked but will this continue?

“ Product stays alive for 10 years. Person who puts the business case together becomes a VP.”

Engineer is requested to put business plan together after half assed vendor / director tweaked for more buzzwords power point presentation is considered enough for budget approval to sell it to other teams or when it’s finally questioned by someone with some sort of common sense and technical knowledge. Then director is promoted to VP. 10 years later it’s pulled meanwhile year 5 that person is now an SVP and they can pin it on someone else.

Christopher Nolan’s next project…The repeated failures of T-Mobile in IMAX 2027.

@11z The T-Mobile Way...

  1. Someone in "The Business" puts together a crazy business plan without talking to a technical resource.
  2. Business plan says it'll generate "new growth and new money".
  3. Large amounts of $$ spent on Technical development that misses the target.
  4. Product wildly underperforms.
  5. Product stays alive for 10 years. Person who puts the business case together becomes a VP.

And they were handsomely rewarded for blowing $100 million on digits. They very cleverly renamed watch lines to “digits” lines to mask the investment losses.

Brilliant!

@jt Got a couple of Job alerts from Big Pink for openings on the west coast:

  • Sr. Product Manager
  • Technical Product Manager, Physical AI

Likely posts required to have the slot filled by an H1B who's "the only person in the US who could do the job"... SMH

I’m seeing quite a few LinkedIn posts for folks looking for work. I know things are bad there but I doubt there is a huge amount quitting without a backup plan. Are they back to the low key layoffs after claiming to be finished with them months ago? This would not be sales or care ICs by the way - technology side of the house.

All of TMO is a sinking ship. especially after throwing so many eggs in the AI basket and cutting half your workforce to do it...

@eg They then tried to sell to morph Digits into a wireless PBX system. It was so bad T-Mobile wouldn't buy/use their own product. They bought from a competitor.

@OP You want something they really lost money on? Digits. They spent two years and multiple millions in development on a "solution" that AT&T had tried and ABANDONED some 5 years earlier. Not sure it ever got above the very low 6 digit range in uptake. For something eventually made "free".

Digits was one of Neville and Abdul's biggest mistakes.

@OP How do you show you don't understand capacity or network slicing. By making this post.

IBM shows you what happens when you have an Ind I an CEO. (Starbucks also fired theirs and Elon got rid of Twitter’s when he bought it).

Markets understand the HSI business just fine. You don't. Network capacity can be grown profitably.
