Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

Merit Doesn't Care About Your Nationality.

I'm tired of hearing the same lazy narrative that Indian H1B IT professionals are "stealing jobs."

Let's settle a few things.

Indian IT professionals didn't invent the global labor market. Companies did.

If an employer in the U.S. hires someone from India, it's because they believe that person delivers better value , not because someone stole a seat at the table.

Many Indian engineers work 12–16 hour days, often across multiple time zones, while being paid significantly less than their counterparts in the West. That isn't exploitation by Indian workers; it's a business decision made by the companies doing the hiring. Or Companies wisely hiring 6 people in India instead of 1 person in west for same budget.

So here's my question: Why do some people assume they're entitled to earn five or six times more simply because they were born in a different country? In a capitalist market, compensation follows perceived value, skills, demand, and business economics—not nationality.

Another claim I constantly see is that Indians are somehow less capable. Yet if you look across the global technology industry, you'll find Indian-origin leaders running some of the world's most influential companies. That didn't happen because of charity. It happened because they proved themselves.

No one is forcing companies to hire Indian engineers. No one is forcing founders or executives to build engineering teams in Hyderabad or Bengaluru. Those decisions are made because businesses believe they're getting exceptional talent and results.

If you believe someone is taking your job, perhaps the better question isn't "Why did they hire them?" but "Why did they choose them over me?"

That's how competition works.

You don't have to like globalization. You don't have to like outsourcing. But blaming individual engineers who accepted opportunities offered to them misses the point entirely.

If you disagree, explain why. I'm interested in arguments based on facts and economics—not stereotypes.

In my opinion, this is an anti-American website.

Funny. This website owes you nothing. The fact that they tolerate any amount of anonymous discussion not related to layoffs is amazing.

In my opinion, this is an anti-American website.

They are blocking the free exchange of ideas espoused by a native-born Indian that moved to the west.

@d8 Don't be too sure about the winner's version of history that you're repeating. Average Americans have no say in what's happening overseas. Ordinary people are not your enemies. It's hard to tell from your post: is America so terrible that you want to stay?

@bq Weird how colonisers think they own the country after few centuries .

First they mu---red the red Indians. And then restricted them to few areas called reservations.

They were behind the gold and wealth across Asia, Africa and looted them.Still continuing. More recently Iraq, Venezuela and Iran. All for Oil and natural resources to make themselves rich. What business does US have in Middle East except for Looting their natural resources.

This has been going around from last 200 years and looted every part of the world and finally settled in a place and themselves calling it their country.

Remember, except for Americans every race on this planet works hard for their lives and doesnt steal and plunder other nations with BS reasons only to steal their wealth

And such a hypocrites, they think the immigrants with White skin will naturally become Americans while every other race are still reminded of their country even after 3-4 generations of living in US. Shameless hypocrites.

Weaker currencies exist because of the unspoken and humane version of colonization. Without weaker currencies, downward pressure on US wages would not exist. And who are most likely to accept lower wages that are several multiples of what they would be accustomed to? H1Bs. All of this is a very elaborate design. Plebs from all countries keep fighting each other over the effects of such design.

Ban all H1Bs immediately. These sc-mb@g C-Suite traitors that outsource jobs deserve to be deported. They hate America and hard-working, tax-paying Americans.

Also, there is a huge opportunity in Russia to shovel snow. A lot of Indians have taken it. Better hurry while they still have vacancies. It’s a good career and no fake degree is required.

Not less capable. But there are a lot of you, therefore a lot of inept ones.

Pertaining to Indians, since the wait for a greencard is over the span of a lifetime without EB-1, there is a subset of you playing politics to game bullsh-t patents the USCIS will detect hopefully. Re-building the wheel over, and over, again to show fake impact. To this group, go fu-k yourselves, and provide some real impact. EB-1’s are reserved for the Einsteins, and Nash’s of the world, not scam artists with an above-average IQ.

@b5 Who exactly is American? - Are you referring to Native Americans whom the occupiers mass mu rd red and took their land?

or people from Europe who wanted to find a route to India for its wealth and spices and accidentally landed in now called US?

Or Chinese who were brought in ships across pacific to do labour?

Or Africans who were captured to be slaves?

I am confused.!

As of May 31, 2026, we employed approximately 141,000 full-time employees, of which approximately 49,000 were employed in the U.S. and approximately
92,000 were employed internationally.
And please, remind me where does india buy oil, coal, we-pons and many other interesting things? All that is done using the money that american companies are gladly sending over there.
It’s well past the time to end all this once and forever.

"Another claim I constantly see is that Indians are somehow less capable. Yet if you look across the global technology industry, you'll find Indian-origin leaders running some of the world's most influential companies. ."

Running a company != able to do the work. Most CEOs could not do technical work to any meaningful degree, so this is an argument that doesn't hold water to the vast majority of people's experience with the workers in question. On the CEO topic: how many of those CEOs ACTUALLY BUILT THE COMPANY THEY ARE RUNNING? Or did they just get handed it when a non-Indian built it first? Next, I recently looked at stocks of companies run by those individuals in publicly traded companies and they are bad. So again, they get the job, but can't do the job. On a massive scale in this case. Lets cite the most recent massive egregious example: IBM. Over 25% stock slide last week.

Next, in mine and other domestic workers' actual lived experience on the front line where the sausage is actually produced in IT work (spanning multiple decades in my case), 80-90% are less than "average" at doing the actual job. I am talking overall: ability to communicate English effectively, ability to solve problems without SIGNIFICANT help, and creative ability to insert details without being told every little detail and step ahead of time. All of these issues are persistent and pervasive and I don't see much of it changing through the decades.

The argument that "globalization is why" is a false premise. Because of globalization and the economics, there is no way to compete. Not until we compare apples to apples. Until the Indian economics rise or the American economics fall to the point where they are level, there is no competition. An American cannot compete on price at a most basic level because of the cost of living in the states. Period. That's a handicap in this argument, so there is no comparison to be had because of that.

To be clear, that 10-20% that are good are absolutely fine. I have no problem with them and have worked with some of them. Worth it. I will not fight you on those instances.

The nepotistic ones, and the ones that submit false credentials, play games, and get carried? I blame them just as much as the decision makers who decided to outsource.

Thank you, come again.

Lets face the reality...American labor costs more and drives prices up, and U.S. companies always look to lower overhead costs, and drive competitiveness to compete with countries like China. Therefore the H-1B visa is a great helper to get talented labour for less cost. This is the reality.

Also, the H1B visa is a U.S. immigration and labor policy of the government, so it is there for the best interest of the USA.

Come on, boys. US currency is just paper without intrinsic value. You've been printing paper for decades and exchanging it for goods that have real value. Rest of the world has to work hard to produce those goods, while you simply print more dollars to buy them. So stop crying about some one taking your jobs !!!

Now the world is gradually moving toward de-dollarization. More countries are trading in their own currencies and reducing their dependence on the U.S. dollar. Let's see how your economy performs if that privilege continues to diminish.

Think about all the wars waged in last 100 years and what the invaded country lost by getting "Democracy" and what U S benefited.

@OP Let's be truthful...Indians were originally hired because they were reduced labor, not because they were better. White Americans were/are too lazy to learn and do the computer work they were hired to do and they were/are too prejudiced to give the people of color in their own country the same opportunities to do work that they deem valuable.

Truth: The US type of capitalism is unsustainable because it does and has and will continue to rely on free and reduced labor under the premise that White people are superior...Indians suffered at the very hands of Whites for decades yet they still practice selective, colorism, and misogynistic democracy in their own country and they come over here with those same fu$ked up believes which is why they side with MAGA (maggots) when they get over here. It's unfortunate but YOU are a part of what is wrong with the US.

Just look at how beneficial it's been to lose the domestic manufacturing base. Untold thousands of jobs sent to lower-cost locations so a small few can reap exorbitant benefits.

Of course we should port that fantastic idea broadly, across all jobs.

@OP

Great points! At what time do these well-reasoned points flow upward to senior "leadership"?

If it's so beneficial, we should strive to broadly adopt this holistically, especially where the per-employee cost savings would be greatest.

Or is there an inherent job level to where the benefits of offshoring cease to exist?

@OP

If you believe someone is taking your job, perhaps the better question isn't "Why did
they hire them?" but "Why did they choose them over me?"

Your posting p!ssed me off, because you're right.

YES they're going to go for the cheapest labor they can find. Lower expenses increases profits, which (in general) increases stock prices. This is what businesses DO. It's all about their own pockets, the stock prices, and their shareholders. That's IT.

Being in tech, I've worked with a LOT of H1Bs and these people have been very capable and talented and I'm happy to have known and worked with them. People shouldn't take it out on the H1Bs (Indian or otherwise) just because the company hired them because hey cost less.

The only solution for that is for the government to pass a law to force these companies to pay American wages to the H1B workers. Like that's ever going to happen.

In addition to this particular gripe people have, posters on some of the boards I look at have been complaining that there looks to be a general suppression of wages and benefits being offered to new hires. Unless these companies have always been this cheap and nobody noticed because they had jobs and weren't looking.
