Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Why is the Union being ignored

With all the constant talk regarding RIF and layoffs. Plus, rumors of a reorganization of the lines of business. The company has not asked for any reduction of headcount on the union side. What gives?

@dj The company is going to have a bunch of 64 and a half year olds still working here if they do not come up with a good EISP that also addresses the pre Medicare healthcare problem.

@d9 Most associates retire between 55 and 60 with medical insurance and pension or lump sum buyout . With very little workplace stress staying beyond retirement eligibility isn’t a struggle .

OP - the associates are not part of the talks. They have there own process for layoffs since the older & younger members fight like the US govt. They will usually retire at around 70 and will miss their retirement golden years.

The worst move the company ever made was becoming “one Verizon”. That’s when things tanked.

@bt I don’t remember seeing AI out clearing trees off of lines. I don’t remember seeing AI pulling in new fiber and splicing it. I don’t remember seeing AI pumping out flooded manholes and vaults.

Because your “leadership” is afraid of unions.

Claude Gemini and ChatGPT are replacing you, union jobs a little harder to replace. I can’t believe the company hasn’t fired more of you. My associate director barely comes to work. He forwards any emails he thinks are important and is busy working his other job as a car salesman

@OP They can layoff some of the people if they want . Union sold their members out in the mid 2000’s contract. Those individuals don’t have any layoff protection. Will it happen? Doubt it.

@OP do you know what a Contract means?

The union has a ratified four year contract extension starting next month. If the company wants to get union people off the books, a good EISP would probably be a painless way to do it. If not, these people will be here until Medicare age.
