About Sears:: Sears, Roebuck & Company is a large international department store chain headquartered in Hoffman Estates, IL (very close to Chicago). Sears was founded by Richard Warren Sears and Alvah Curtis Roebuck in 1893 - initially the company operated as a mail order catalog. The company saw tremendous growth in the 1950s and 1960s, after this period Sears started to decline. In 2005, it was bought out by another large company, Kmart, which renamed itself Sears Holdings. Until late 1989, Sears was the largest retailer in the States (replaced by Wal Mart). Target, Home Depot and Best Buy have also surpassed Sears since. As of late 2012, Sears is the 4th largest U.S. department store company by retail sales.
