The race against negative press

With Techwire watching, each posting of bad news and negative opinion here weighs on this Wall Street debutante. The race between press and IPO is on. The IPO can’t come soon enough.

Pet loser products

There are many loser products (negative ROI). Which loser product(s) will hang on merely because they are looked upon as pets by the founders?

Does anyone know the headcount?

In the past week we've had layoffs in DevOps, Retail, and Marketing. SAS confirmed only the layoff in Retail, and did not give a headcount. Does anyone know how many people were laid off?

Cutting into disappearance

Sweeping cuts will grind this company into the ground. And sure as he-l they’re not going to solve any of our problems. They run much deeper. We have a hard time keeping competent people on and improving on who and what we already have. But silly me... — read more

why are layoffs handled differently now?

used to be that your email address disappeared from the system immediately and you disappeared from the directory within 24 hours. now it looks like people stay active in the system for a month or longer. what gives?

New employees are leaving as fast as they're joining

Why does it seem that we've gone from being a good workplace where everybody wanted to join and build a career to a transitional company where people only join while they're waiting for something better to come up? At least that's the impression I've... — read more

Reverse IPO?

At Innovate, SAS will rebrand the company as a reseller of other people's software trying to be an AI startup. After 2 years, $1B, and permission to shuffle and fire staff in every department, JG now owns a smaller percentage of "SAS" than ever... — read more

(early career) : thinly veiled age discrimination?

I have noticed the return of (early career) internal job postings. I thought these had gone away but they are back. This seems to me to be a way to discourage older workers from applying. Having the level as "associate" isn't enough, they throw... — read more

topheavy with “decision makers”

This: ‘I have never seen an org so topheavy with "decision makers" and strategists and advisors and so precious few people to do the actual work.’ [https://www.thelayoff.com/post/@oeq+1r9TiFER]

What's going relatively well?

I share many of the same laments and nostalgia and sadness in the comments here. Seems like we've covered everything. But just wondering what is going relatively well lately. Working at a customer site now, and will be investing in an upgrade. Hoping... — read more

A large round of VRB would solve the age issue

The age thing is a separate issue. Because turnover was so low for so long the average age of the company's employees is very high. Compared to the average age of employees at competitor orgs, it's extremely high. That does not look good for IPO. A... — read more

Viya vs. Databricks vs. Dataiku vs. others

What’s everyone’s opinion on the big names in the data, AI, ML space? (Msft, AWS, and Google included. Since they all have similar platforms within each cloud option) Who’s doing it right? What’s lacking? How do they stack up. Generally curious. — read more

Still WFH? How many are back at Cary HQ?

I recall many buildings feeling empty before Covid - partly because they overbuilt and the "office for everyone" made it feel closed off. SAS best perk for me was the campus so just curious if more staff are commuting again.

Hard to fail

I wonder if the tall guy realizes that his success was based on SAS being the only game in town for so many years. Was his decision making less than stellar from the beginning? It would have been next to impossible to fail in those early years. So... — read more

Goodnight’s Utilitarianism - cementing his legacy

We should all be thankful that his focus is not only on maximizing return or the survival of the company but on the employees that are his stated assets. Sure, layoffs are indicated in the preparation for sale or IPO but the fact that they haven’t... — read more

A shame the Broadcom deal fell through

With hindsight, the Broadcom deal could have been about the best possible outcome for SAS. It's a shame JG's ego apparently got in the way of what would have made good business sense. If you're interested, check out the WMWare page on this site... — read more

Layoff predictions 2024

I’d bet a red swingline stapler and an expired sas/access license the next round will be the week of 1/28. What is your guess or inside scoop? Who is next on the chopping block?

Is planned obsolescence THE plan?

Revenue has been constipated around $3B for close to 10 years. Few companies see enough value in Viya to adopt it. SAS is actively discouraging new V9 sales. JMP sales likely do not cover JMP salaries and benefits. Commercial real estate occupancy... — read more

I'm just so tired.

I'm beyond frustrated with this company. I'm working, on average, 50 hours a week just to keep my group above water. And for what? Cr-p pay? To have the scope of my job keep increasing while other group in SAS tell me they can't do their job... — read more
