RIF/Layoffs 2025

I find the rumblings just (which will happen Thursday… where there is smoke, there is fire) rolling off my back, like water off a ducks.

In Jan/Feb 2021, I was part of the RIF and was able to find a new role. After living through that experience and being a people leader then, I told myself that next time major rumblings came around, that I would embrace the RIF. So here I am embracing Thursday’s news.

Sure there is anxiety about am I impacted or am I not, but I don’t really want to start this post-Verizon change pre holidays leading into 2026 that the macro US economy is going to be dreadful. With that said, there is life outside of Verizon. There are a lot of good things happening in industry outside of Verizon.

We are just a cog in the wheel for shareholder value and the stock price. Our CEO has made that crystal clear. It’s best to treat your role as a cog in the machine for you to enjoy life. Think about work in the hours of work, after work forget about it. Come back to it the next day. It’s ok to ignore a slack or an email.

RIF Package expectation based off previous years.

2 weeks pay for each year of service.

Vacation payoff (hope you didn’t drop below 150% before the year ended. *this was the first hint of it happening this year btw.

Stock together- we can dissect this wonderful move. Hans introduced it and ever since we have experienced the stock price lagging against the industry. Not the cause of it obviously, just ironic.

STI- probably *from what I’ve heard gets paid out but that’s coming from a friend of a friend

Tech domains - any worth it or all worthless?

Feels like a lot of waste. Where is the value? Can we not do the same with less? Other companies seem to do fine. I don’t know where the value add or money savings comes from anymore outside RIF’s.

Maybe just reset every leader. Don’t know if any are actually well liked by their own teams even.

No management positions posted

There are no management positions posted on the job board. This time the RIFs do not allow you to look for something internally. If you’re out, there’s no positions to look around for. The only positions posted as of Friday were in retail stores. I’ve never seen this before, it makes things final.

Quick action/Bad decision

While the RIF may be needed to cut cost and financially support or spend on new areas but the outcome of a quick decision like this usually does not work out from my experience. The employees did not get much time since the announcement was made. My concerns is they will be cutting people not having enough time to look at their scope of work. A poor judgement will be made. The leaders should have taken their time to do this exercise. That way we could have kept the right people or department to support our customers and the network. I just do not get what is the hurry for…

Storm clouds ahead

Some in the room have adopted the attitude “just let me survive the Thursday cut and everything will be ok.”

Dan plainly stated “cost reductions will be a way of life for us here”. This is only the first wave. Don’t get comfortable even if you survive this first round. There absolutely will be more RIFs and/or VSPs in 2026 and beyond.

Not pessimistic, just facing realities of the times.

Has your leaders SM or above talked about career progression?

Do leaders in certain parts of the business talk to you about resume building, career progression and stuff if there is a chance that there is a RIF pending?

The department I am in had one with SM a few days ago. It's odd that they are talking about it after the announcement and the time is getting closer to the 20th.

She was going around to each team under her and talking the same talk.

Does anyone know anything about “frontline” sales representatives getting RIF’d?

Just in case there’s some inside information that I’ve missed… I want to know if there’s any way to tell if my location’s going to be affected, and what patterns to look for. I haven’t been with the company very long. Not familiar with layoffs in general.

Merry RIF-mas 🎄( Home for the Holidays)

Merry RIF-mas 🎄, thanks for all the hard work and sacrifice. Thank you for putting your Dreams on hold and neglecting your family and health for the sake of making the shareholders and Execs an extra dollar in their Bonuses and Golden parachutes. Now GTFO your services are no longer needed.

IT took another beating today….

2 months after the August layoffs another massive RIF focused on flattening the org. Aravind’s org took the brunt this time.

What’s next:
IT managers being flipped to IC being discussed.

Elimination of the IT Sr Director role being discussed

Reduction of H1Bs in IT being discussed

Product Org (under Omar) RIF in December

Consumer Org (under John) RIF in December or January

Srini massive Q1 reorg to align with his vision for T-Mobile

The happy go lucky Mike Sievert days are gone. The dark clouds of working under a sr leadership team mostly picked by the board are here. Think of the Lion King when Scar took over the pride lands, that is what TMUS will be the next couple years.

RIF for claims?

I wondered if anyone heard about claims facing RIF. I thought about it through out the year as I filled out my performance review but haven’t heard a single thing or received any emails about my performance in general. Quarterly bonuses end up in my check with no communication or anything sent about them. It’s giving … you’re here for a short time.
